Product review
Compatibility notice: The provided OfficeCam scanning app supports Windows (x64/x86) and macOS running on Intel/AMD architectures. It is not compatible with ARM-based systems such as the Surface Pro X.
A2 large-format capture: The S21 is built as an overhead document camera tailored for large-format work. It can photograph up to A2 size (594 × 420 mm) and also accommodates A3 setups using an adjustable-height arm and a 90-degree foldable hinge. Typical use cases include digitizing newspapers, journals, maps, manuscripts, books, business cards and small three-dimensional objects, as well as live demonstrations and remote collaboration.
Imaging performance: With the camera sensor offering a native 26MP output (5888 × 4522 pixels), the unit can capture fine detail. When combined with the vendor’s scanning software, images can be software-enhanced to the equivalent of up to 600 DPI for publication- or archive-grade results. The adjustable height and foldable design let you position the camera for single pages, spreads or samples of varying thickness.
Smart scanning software: The bundled scanning application provides several automated fixes to speed workflow. Features include automatic digital flattening of curved pages, a finger-removal tool to erase hands from captures, edge-repair routines for damaged papers, and automatic splitting of double-page spreads into separate files. The package also has OCR capabilities to export to searchable PDF or editable formats such as Word, Excel, ePub and plain text.
Lighting and capture tips: The S21 includes a built-in 3-level LED lamp to improve captures in low light; however, very glossy papers or direct bright lighting can produce glare, so external diffuse illumination is often preferable. The unit is intended for controlled lighting scenarios to avoid overexposure or washed-out areas on reflective material.
Connectivity and support: The device is UVC/UAC compliant for video output in conferencing apps and can be used as a presentation camera in online meetings. A one-year warranty is provided and the manufacturer offers technical support. Package contents: S21 book/document scanner, USB cable, scan pad, quick start guide and a manual button.
Pros
- Large A2 capture area suitable for newspapers and maps
- 26MP sensor with software-enhanced up to 600 DPI and OCR
- Quiet, fast capture and UVC/UAC support for video use
Cons
- Bundled software only supports x86/x64 Windows and macOS (no ARM)
- Image quality can suffer with glossy or poorly lit originals
- Hinge stability and editing software can be inconsistent
VerdictThe S21 is a capable overhead scanner for archives, newspapers, books and large documents. Its 26MP sensor and bundled software deliver high-resolution captures and automated corrections (curvature flattening, finger erasure, edge repair, page splitting and OCR). It excels when used with controlled lighting and a desktop PC or Mac running x86/x64 OfficeCam software, but results vary with reflectiv

Simple enough for non-technical users
I’m not tech-savvy and still got it running with ease. It was straightforward to set up; I just need to learn the more advanced functions over time.

Sent back — no improvement over my old device
I returned it because the resolution wasn’t any better than what I already owned; it wasn’t the upgrade I expected.

Useful for photographing fragile newspapers
We use two overhead cameras to capture delicate historic newspapers — one for each page — controlled by inexpensive laptops. Resolution requires a little upscaling in post (we use ImageMagick) and we rely on extra lights while turning off the built-in lamp. The hinge can sometimes fail to stay exactly at 90°, but overall these cameras provide a cost-effective alternative to DSLRs for archive work.

Support replaced a faulty unit quickly
I bought this for multi-document work and struggled to get it running. Tech support walked me through troubleshooting, found a hardware fault, and arranged a replacement. The new unit performs well and the support team was professional and responsive.

Fast capture, editing takes time
The hardware scans quickly, but the app’s editing workflow is slow and sometimes unstable. Curve corrections and other edits can freeze the program, and finishing a long book can be very time consuming. Final results are good after editing, but the process is tedious for large volumes.

Seller replaced a missing part quickly
A part was missing on arrival; the seller sent a replacement promptly and followed up to confirm delivery. The unit matches its description and I’m satisfied with the outcome.

The outcomes did not match the claims made for the product.

Image sharpness below expectations
Scans came out softer than I anticipated. I reached out weeks ago and have not received a reply.

Excellent for archiving family items
This isn’t a flatbed scanner but an overhead photographic scanner. With some basic external lighting, I’ve digitized newspapers, scrapbooks, Bibles and small objects with very readable results. The resolution lets you zoom in on text easily, making it handy for long-term digital storage of keepsakes.

Much faster than our previous workflow
At our museum we upgraded from a different workflow to a VIISAN scanner and soon added a second unit. The S21 handled large newspapers even faster than our prior model — essentially as quickly as you can place the next sheet. It’s also noticeably quieter than our old flatbed, so scanning sessions no longer bother coworkers. We had an initial software hiccup, but support provided an update that fixed it promptly.

Fails to deliver reliable OCR-ready text
I bought this for digitizing books and textbooks but couldn’t get clean text for OCR. Phone photos or a mirrorless camera yielded better results. Lighting either introduces noise or glare depending on settings, so text clarity was inconsistent and not suitable for my library.

Returned because photo quality disappointed
After several hours of testing I returned it. It’s passable for plain document capture but produced unacceptable results for photos. The software is easy to use but lacks advanced photo tools I expected for the price.
