Product review

This product is a nixtamalized masa harina milled from heirloom yellow corn sourced in Mexico. The processing preserves deep corn aroma and a pronounced, slightly nutty flavor characteristic of traditional masa.

A single bag yields roughly 84 six-inch tortillas when prepared following typical hydration ratios, making it suitable for multiple meals or small gatherings. The flour is gluten-free and intended for making corn tortillas, tamales, tostadas, pupusas, arepas and related dishes, as well as for use as a flavorful coating or thickener in pan-frying and sauces.

Preparation is straightforward: mix the masa with water to form a pliable dough, shape or press into disks for tortillas, or adapt to recipes for tamales and fried batters. Beginners may need to adjust hydration and thickness to achieve the desired flexibility and avoid stickiness.

For inspiration, the brand’s cookbook MASA collects recipe ideas and techniques for using masa harina in everyday cooking. Keep the bag sealed and kept in a cool, dry place to preserve flavor and shelf life. The company emphasizes connecting people to Mexican culinary traditions through ingredient quality and authentic flavor.

Pros

  • Rich, authentic corn flavor
  • Versatile across many dishes
  • Nixtamalized and gluten-free

Cons

  • Higher-priced than basic alternatives
  • Dough can be sticky for first-timers
  • May require technique adjustments for best results

VerdictThis nixtamalized heirloom corn flour delivers genuine corn flavor and flexible use across many Latin preparations. It performs well for tortillas and chips and also works as a flavorful alternative to wheat in batters and thickeners. Some users report sticky dough at first and higher cost than commodity options, but many appreciate the taste and texture once they adapt their technique.

Customer reviews

  1. Mike C. 3/5

    Pricey compared to basics

Quality is evident, but it costs noticeably more than common masa options.

  2. Tyler 5/5

    Tortilla-ready corn flour

Great corn flour for homemade tortillas — full corn taste and cooks up nicely. I’ve eaten them plain and used them for tacos. A solid carb choice for active folks.

  3. Laura Tuttle 5/5

    User-friendly masa

Works easily and consistently for my recipes. My go-to masa.

  4. Barbara B. 5/5

    Versatile beyond tortillas

I mostly use it as a substitute for wheat in batters and as a thickener for pan-frying. Not gluten-free myself, but the corn adds real flavor that plain flour lacks. Worth trying.

  5. Wade fowler 5/5

    Arrived as expected

Package arrived intact and the product performs as described — a reliable masa harina.

  6. CrèmeBrûléeRules 5/5

    Good results for a first-timer

We follow a gluten-free lifestyle and I wanted to try masa to see if it agreed with us. The dough was simple to mix and the tortillas tasted fresh. I found recipes that left out salt, so I added some next time and preferred them that way. Without a tortilla press I sandwiched dough between cutting boards and it worked; I’ll roll thinner next time. Overall they held together well and I even air-fried salted chips from the scraps. I’d keep using this.

  7. melissa k. 4/5

    Tasty but tricky dough

The flavor is excellent, but we struggled making tortillas at first — the dough stayed sticky and the rounds didn’t puff. Even so, I’d buy it again because it tastes so good.
