Product review
Premium gelling power: This agar powder delivers a gel strength of 1000, which is higher than many common brands. Because of that concentration, you can achieve the same set using less product, making it economical for frequent use.
Plant-based source and size: The product is an unflavored, vegan gelling agent made from 100% red seaweeds. It comes as a 12 oz package of fine agar-agar powder suitable for culinary and household uses, acting as a direct substitute for animal gelatin.
Nutritional profile: Agar is rich in dietary fiber and contains minerals such as calcium and iron, along with trace vitamins. Those attributes contribute to digestive support and can complement weight-management and bone-health efforts when used as part of a balanced diet.
How to use: One tablespoon of this agar powder replaces roughly 6–8 tablespoons of traditional gelatin. It’s suited to making jellies, jams, custards, vegan cheeses, marshmallows, ice creams, puddings, yogurts, soups, and pet treats. It also works for firming up confectionery and stabilizing emulsions.
Manufacturing and certifications: Produced in a dedicated agar processing facility to prevent cross-contamination. The powder is nut-free, non-GMO, certified vegan and labeled halal. A complimentary agar cookbook PDF is provided, filled with user-submitted recipes and technique tips to get started.
Support and guarantee: The product is backed by a 100% satisfaction promise and responsive customer support. There are many community-tested recipes and guides available to help with applications ranging from desserts to experimental culture media.
Pros
- High gel strength (1000) uses less product
- 100% plant-based from red seaweed; unflavored
- Nut-free, non-GMO, vegan and halal certified
Cons
- Slight marine note may appear in mild recipes
- Requires heating to fully dissolve and activate
- Opened packages may be nonreturnable depending on seller policy
VerdictA reliable vegan gelling agent with unusually high gel strength that reduces the amount needed in recipes. It’s versatile — from confections to cultured media — and carries clean labeling and allergen-safe production. Note that a mild sea-like note can surface in delicate recipes; plan for bolder flavors or rinsing methods if that’s a concern. Overall a practical pantry staple for vegan cooking an

Not ideal for my desserts
The package size was fine, but the product had a strong ocean-like scent and flavor that didn't suit the desserts I intended. I had already opened the package so I couldn't return it.

Great for first-time jello

Sets reliably but has a faint taste
Sets and thickens exactly as expected and I value the plant-based option. There is a subtle sea-like flavor that shows up in simpler dishes, so it pairs better with stronger flavors. Still useful overall, just be mindful for delicate recipes.

Good for thickening homemade coconut yogurt
I don't detect a taste in my cooking. Using it helped thicken my coconut yogurt when paired with a vegan starter; other thickeners I tried gave poor results. This powder improved texture without odd flavors.

Used for making nutrient agar for petri dishes
You can turn this into nutrient agar for plates. I use sterile dishes, distilled water, one beef bouillon cube, 1/3 cup sugar and about 2½ tablespoons of this agar (yields ~20–23 90mm dishes). Heat until fully dissolved, pour into sterile plates and let set.
