Product review
Package contents: Twelve magnetic stir bars per set. Each bar measures 20mm (0.78 inch) in length with a 6mm (0.24 inch) diameter.
Materials and construction: The bars are constructed around a high-quality magnetic steel core that is fully encapsulated in a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating. The cylindrical shape and smooth finish are intended to minimize drag and promote consistent spinning on magnetic stir plates.
Durability: The PTFE coating provides chemical inertness and protection against corrosion and abrasion, and the magnetic core is selected for lasting magnetic strength. These bars tolerate elevated temperatures and resist demagnetization under normal laboratory conditions, making them suitable for repeated use.
Performance details: Smooth workmanship with minimal surface imperfections helps maintain stable rotation and reduce wobble. The design withstands higher rotational forces applied by modern stirrers, though performance can vary with vessel size, liquid viscosity and stir speed.
Typical applications: These stir bars are suitable for routine mixing tasks in academic, industrial and agricultural labs. They pair with most magnetic and heated stir plates for mixing reagents, solutions and suspensions in beakers, flasks and similar vessels.
Pros
- Chemically inert and heat resistant PTFE coating
- Smooth cylindrical profile reduces friction and wobble
- Pack of 12 covers routine lab needs
Cons
- Some pieces may have a raised rim that hinders vortexing
- Less effective for very viscous mixtures without manual stirring
- May require larger sizes to avoid skipping at high speed
VerdictThese 20mm PTFE-coated magnetic stir bars offer reliable, corrosion-resistant performance for everyday laboratory mixing. The PTFE shell and magnetic steel core provide durability and smooth rotation in typical aqueous and solvent applications. They resist heat and abrasion and work well on a variety of stir plates, though some users report edge features on certain units that can limit vortex form

Performs reliably
Tried them on a friend's Corning magnetic stirrer; they spun smoothly with no issues.

Doesn't fully blend my inks
Each bar has a raised rim around the outer edge, so it won't form a clean vortex. My inks stay partially unmixed and I end up stirring by hand before blending. I'll swap them for fully smooth bars.

Good for larger beakers
Needed stir bars for bigger vessels and the larger units I ordered work very well. They stay centered and don't 'dance' like smaller bars at high speed.
