Product review
Introduce children to dramatic roleplay with a child-sized foam Roman scutum that encourages active, collaborative outdoor and indoor play.
What’s included: one foam Roman shield (scutum). The shield is intended for young children and complements foam swords and other costume accessories sold separately.
Materials and construction: crafted from high-quality EVA foam, the scutum is lightweight, flexible and resistant to wear. The rear holds two adjustable velcro straps that are riveted to the foam for added durability rather than glued onto the surface.
Size and fit: designed for ages 3 and up, the shield is clearly sized for younger children — comfortable for toddlers and early primary school kids to carry and wield during pretend battles.
How it’s used: perfect for themed parties, school Roman days, theatrical presentations, or imaginative backyard adventures. It lets children play the part of Roman soldiers or gladiators safely thanks to the soft, bendable foam.
Design approach: the product follows child-focused design principles, emphasizing safety, usability and playful aesthetics so kids can enjoy authentic-looking props without heavy or hazardous materials.
Pros
- Lightweight EVA foam — safe for kids
- Durable riveted velcro straps
- Bright, detailed appearance for roleplay
Cons
- Sized for young children, not adults
- Hard impacts can still sting a bit
- Not as sturdy as rigid plastic props
VerdictThis foam Roman shield is a solid choice for young roleplayers. Made from EVA foam, it balances safety and durability while remaining light enough for small children to carry. The adjustable velcro straps are riveted rather than glued, which improves longevity. It’s clearly sized for toddlers and early school-age kids, so adults seeking a larger prop should plan to modify or choose a different ite

Well made with clear detailing
The shield, capes and swords we got alongside are well made and nicely detailed. The foam swords can smart when an enthusiastic toddler strikes.

Beautiful and sturdy (Italian)
I was unsure about foam at first, but the shield is attractive and robust, with vivid colors and a comfortable grip. The size is right. Approved!

Smaller than pictured
Photos made it look bigger; it's child-sized — about right for a four-year-old. I wanted something larger, so I'll modify it to suit my needs.

Visually nice, practical so-so
It looks well made, but in practical terms it's just okay.

Loved by my grandson
Bought it for my grandson's birthday — he loved it. He uses it with foam swords and it’s held up well. The foam is fairly thick and seems durable. Would suggest it to others.

Solid construction
Good quality toy: light yet tough. I like the fully adjustable velcro straps that are riveted, not glued. I expect it to last. I ordered three more. Would recommend.

Fantastic for family play
A great item — my six-year-old adores it and the matching sword and axe; I bought one for myself so we can duel. Loads of fun. Sturdy and flexible blades mean play isn’t painful, though hard hits can sting. Looks the part and seems built to last.

Surprisingly solid
Bought for my seven-year-old for Roman Day — I was surprised at how solid it is. It stood up to lots of play fighting with swords at school. Quality is excellent, including the velcro straps. My son loved it; highly recommended.
