Two and a half years ago I became obsessed with the idea of creating recipe videos and tutorials. I wanted to be on camera myself instead of only showing overhead shots of hands moving quickly in the kitchen. The goal was to make content that felt more personal and approachable.
It took a full year to gather the courage to appear on camera. I’m much more shy and introverted than many people assume, so stepping in front of the lens was a big deal. About a year and a half ago I finally launched my YouTube channel.
At the start I knew almost nothing about YouTube. I hadn’t been an active viewer or subscriber; I only used the site to look up specific answers. Since then I’ve learned everything about producing video content—shooting, editing, color grading, audio, lighting—and most importantly, how to connect with a community.
The result has been incredible. The community that’s grown around the channel has been so generous and supportive, and together we recently passed 100,000 subscribers. I’m truly grateful for every comment, like, and share. The Downshiftology community is something special.
