Product review
When you head beyond cellular coverage the GPSMAP H1i Plus is a handheld GPS navigator that adds inReach Plus satellite messaging and emergency capabilities. With an active inReach satellite subscription you can send and receive text messages, and use the onboard camera and microphone to capture and share photos and short voice clips — note that some countries regulate or prohibit satellite communicators.
If you need assistance in a crisis, an interactive SOS can be sent to the 24/7 Garmin Response international coordination center for search-and-rescue support (subscriber required; local regulations may apply).
The unit uses a hybrid hardware approach: a 3.5-inch color touchscreen that’s designed to be readable in daylight and usable while wearing gloves, plus physical keys for positive control in adverse conditions. The display is protected by chemically strengthened glass to resist scratches, and the enclosure is engineered to the MIL-STD 810 series for thermal, shock and vibration resistance. The device carries an IP67 rating for dust and water protection.
Mapping features include preloaded TopoActive maps, the ability to download high-resolution satellite imagery, and the option to subscribe to Outdoor Maps+ for expanded premium map content and updates. Multi-band GNSS support and multi-constellation tracking improve positional accuracy in challenging environments.
Battery performance varies by mode: up to 145 hours in all-satellite systems with multi-band assisted tracking using SatIQ technology under typical conditions, and up to 845 hours in the low-power Expedition mode. Typical use scenarios include hiking, backcountry navigation, and remote work where offline communication and precise location are important.
Box contents typically include the handheld unit, a USB-C charging/data cable, a removable carabiner attachment, and quick-start documentation. Pairing to companion apps (such as Garmin Explore and inReach message services) lets you sync routes, manage messages, and configure device settings from a smartphone.

Setup and responsiveness were poor
I consider myself a big Garmin user, but this model was a hassle to register and link to my account. The interface felt sluggish and unintuitive, and I couldn’t convince myself it was worth keeping given the setup problems.

Frustrating performance and map problems
Maps displayed poorly for me — lacking topo detail — and downloads stalled partway through. The unit felt slow compared with older handhelds I’ve owned, and the display lacked the vibrancy I expected. Overall it didn’t meet my needs.

Promising concept but too many issues
The interface layout is an improvement and I wanted to like it, but the screen felt too dim for my taste and I experienced frequent reboots. Map installs failed repeatedly and overall the stability left me disappointed. I ended up returning it because I couldn’t rely on it for trips until the software and stability improve.

Great for safety and precise location work
Took a little time to learn the controls but it’s straightforward for anyone comfortable with tech. I use it for parcel drop locations during commercial drone flights and the accuracy has been excellent compared with other mapping overlays I use.

Works reliably for navigation
Device performed exactly as needed for navigation. Garmin’s platform remains dependable and the unit handled routes and tracking without problems.

Solid upgrade from an older Garmin
I moved up from a Montana 650t to get satellite messaging and inReach features. I still carry paper maps and a compass as backups and use short hikes to trial gear. Weight-wise I find it fine — mine with the supplied carabiner is lighter than my old unit — and I prefer extra safety over shaving ounces. It paired easily with my phone and the companion apps and I was able to sync maps and messages without fuss.

Crashes and tracking loss ruined a trip
While hunting the device crashed when using navigation and trackback; the touchscreen then became unresponsive until a factory reset, which erased my hours of tracking. The display was duller than expected and battery life fell far short of the claimed maximum in my testing. Map downloads were unreliable and I found my phone to be more dependable in the field.

Glitchy — hold off for now
Experienced repeated glitches and instability. I’d recommend waiting for software refinements before buying.
