Product review

Compact footprint and purposeful design: the Grindenstein is shaped to sit on many espresso machine drip trays or beside the group head, keeping used grounds contained without adding clutter to the countertop. Its reduced diameter is intentional to enable close storage near the machine.

Construction and components: the box uses a thick, glossy plastic outer shell with a solid steel core in the knock bar for impact resistance. That crossbar is fully coated in dense rubber to protect portafilters, dampen sound, and absorb strikes. A small info booklet is included that offers ideas for recycling the spent coffee grounds, such as using them as garden fertilizer.

Capacity and care: the compact bin holds several used pucks (typically a few extra shots for home use) before needing to be emptied. It is top-rack dishwasher safe and also very easy to rinse clean by hand. A rubberized base helps keep the box from sliding during use.

Origin and design note: the product was designed by the Dreamfarm team in Brisbane, Australia, and carries the brand’s signature focus on clever, user-friendly kitchen tools.

Pros

  • Compact footprint fits many home setups
  • Sturdy steel core with sound-dampening rubber
  • Dishwasher-safe and easy to rinse clean

Cons

  • Small capacity requires more frequent emptying
  • Central knock bar can split pucks
  • Bar is not removable for separate cleaning

VerdictA thoughtfully engineered small knock box that balances durability, quiet use and minimal counter footprint. Ideal for single-operator home setups where space is tight and daily emptying is acceptable. Durable materials and simple cleaning make it a low-maintenance accessory.

Customer reviews

  1. April Lee 5/5

    Does exactly what it should

Performs well — far better than knocking pucks into the sink.

  2. DenMar 5/5

Attractive, well thought out and robust

Bought mine in 2021 and the build and design impressed me. It’s non-slip, holds several grounds without being bulky, cleans easily under running water, and looks great. I liked it enough to purchase a second one.

  3. panayis 3/5

    Smaller than it appears

A bit too small to be very practical.

  4. Mike 5/5

Handy accessory for a new machine

Compact design fits neatly beside my espresso machine and feels solid rather than flimsy. The knock bar is gentle on the portafilter and the angled rim makes clearing pucks quick with minimal mess. The rubber base prevents sliding and cleanup is simple—just rinse. The muted color blends well with my other kitchen gear; a worthwhile small upgrade for daily use.

  5. M. Lebo 5/5

Stable, simple and easy to clean

Exactly what a home barista needs. The smaller bin suits domestic use—by the time it’s full you’ll want to empty it anyway to avoid stale pucks. Smooth plastic rinses clean quickly and it stays steady on the countertop.

  6. Gardener George 5/5

    Good match for my Breville

Sturdy, nicely finished red, and holds around six pucks. Small footprint and it looks smart next to my machine.

  7. Buffer 5/5

Nearly ideal for a tidy counter

I picked this over a plain steel box and like the color and feel. The rubber base keeps it steady and the knock bar is nicely cushioned. It’s definitely on the small side (about 3–4 pucks) and was intended to tuck under the group head — it won’t fit under my Gaggia Classic with the portafilter on, but it looks smart beside the machine. My only annoyance is the centered bar, which tends to split the puck instead of delivering a single whole disc.

  8. tan kang wee leslie 5/5

    Quality feel

    High quality!

  9. Christopher Lang 5/5

A practical plastic box that holds pucks

Well-made and durable, if a bit small for some. It will take about five or six 58mm pucks before dumping, which is fine for me since I empty weekly. Thick glossy plastic, fully rubber-coated bar, not removable but easy to rinse. Robust, affordable, and unobtrusive.

  10. Nir 4/5

    Compact, attractive and functional

It’s small enough to sit where a cup goes in the machine, saving counter space. It handles knocks without fuss, is top-rack dishwasher safe, and looks good. Downsides: an off-angle hit can spill grounds, and the rubberized bar doesn’t detach. If it were slightly wider I’d rate it higher; I give it four stars.

  11. G. Swanson 5/5

Excellent for a single espresso drinker

I brew alone and this is perfect. The puck slides out easily into compost, the rubber-coated steel bar is very sturdy and 1–2 knocks clears the portafilter. I can make several shots before emptying, and cleaning is a breeze. The bright red model looks great and fits on my Breville grate.

  12. Gerald Lightsey 5/5

Just right for a narrow coffee nook

After receiving a Breville Barista Express, I needed a knock box that wouldn’t overcrowd our tiny bar area. The larger Breville model was too big, but this 4-inch Dreamfarm Grindenstein in silver-gray fits perfectly in the space and does the job reliably.
