Discover Ottawa’s Canadian Tulip Festival: Dates, Events & Tips

Ottawa’s Tulip Festival is one of my favourite times of year. If you’re planning to visit the Canadian Tulip Festival, here’s everything I’ve learned from attending nearly every year since childhood. These are my top tips to help you make the most of the festival.

📅 Dates

The festival usually takes place in May, with peak bloom often mid-month but varying each year depending on weather.

2026 Dates: May 8–18

Bloom timing can shift, so check the National Capital Commission’s bloom updates before you go; they publish a daily “tulip meter” that shows current bloom levels.

📍 Locations

Top spots to see tulips in Ottawa:

  • Commissioners Park / Dow’s Lake — classic rows and the largest beds
  • Major’s Hill Park — great for picnics with views of the river and Parliament Hill
  • Rideau Canal — beds line much of the canal, perfect for a scenic walk, bike or run
  • Canadian Museum of History — check the riverbank behind the museum
  • Canadian War Museum — lovely beds along the path by the river

⏰ Timing Tips

  • Tulip displays change dramatically through early, peak and late bloom — each stage has a different look.
  • Morning light is best for photos and you’ll find fewer people then.
  • Weekdays are much quieter than weekends; if you can, plan a weekday visit.
  • If possible, visit more than once to catch different bloom stages.

🚗 Parking Tips

Parking around festival sites fills quickly. Consider these alternatives:

  • Walk — many locations are close together and easily explored on foot
  • Bike — convenient and fast for linking multiple spots
  • Public transit — buses serve nearby areas
  • Run — a fun and efficient way to see many beds if you’re dressed for it

You can link several tulip locations into a single loop following the canal, making transit or active travel the easiest options.

🌷 Other Info

  • Dog-friendly — many paths and parks welcome leashed dogs
  • Art installations are placed throughout the festival, adding interest beyond the flowers
  • Food vendors and coffee spots are usually nearby for snacks and warming up on cool mornings
  • The festival makes for an easy half-day outing or a relaxed full-day wander

💐 Mother’s Day Idea

The festival is a low-effort, lovely idea for Mother’s Day: bring coffee, take a peaceful walk, and consider a small picnic if the weather allows.

🏃‍♀️ Running Route

Running is one of the best ways to take in many displays quickly. You can loop past multiple tulip spots along the canal on popular local routes that connect Commissioners Park, Major’s Hill Park and other beds.
