Vegan Travel Guide to Tulum — Where to Stay, Eat and Play

Hello! If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen that I recently spent time in Tulum, Mexico. I shared plenty of stories from the trip—mouthwatering vegan meals, gorgeous hotels, and endless tropical vibes. Tulum felt like paradise: warm weather, abundant yoga, spiritual energy, eco-conscious businesses, and a thriving vegan food scene.

Below is a practical, healthy vegan guide to Tulum based on my stay. I’ll share where we stayed, what we did, where we ate, and a few shopping picks. I travel carefully—researching lodging, dining options for vegan and gluten-free diets, and photogenic spots—so you can benefit from my first-hand experience. I also love supporting local artists and finding handmade goods, so I’ll include some shopping recommendations too.

WHERE TO STAY

AZULIK
We began our trip at Azulik, a stunning eco-boutique hotel directly on the beach. The design highlights natural materials and artistic touches; it’s more an experience than a conventional hotel. Expect limited electricity, no in-room lighting after dark (candlelit evenings are magical), no AC, and spotty Wi‑Fi. These limitations encouraged us to disconnect, which was restorative. Our room had a beach view and a private jacuzzi.

Azulik offers several on-site restaurants, yoga classes (complimentary for guests, though quality varies), spa treatments, and an art gallery. The food is beautifully presented and vegan options exist, but prices are high. I recommend Azulik for the unique atmosphere and views; for a longer or more functional stay you may prefer another property. Alternatively, visit the restaurant or bar for drinks and the view if you don’t want to stay overnight.

HOLISTIKA
We spent the remainder of our trip at Holistika, located in town rather than on the beach. From the moment you arrive—greeted by the “BE HERE NOW” sign—you sense the gentle, grounding energy. Check-in included positive affirmation cards and a short jungle walk to our room.

Holistika is thoughtfully designed with a lovely yoga shala offering yoga, breathwork, sound baths, and other healing sessions. The grounds feature an art walk with installations and murals, two large pools, and plenty of hammocks. Unlike Azulik, Holistika has air conditioning and reliable Wi‑Fi in rooms, but the vibe remains down-to-earth and restorative. We often stayed on site because there was so much to do. The on-site restaurant, Tierra, stands out—more on that in the food section. Holistika also offers dorm-style rooms for retreat attendees, and four friendly resident cats roamed the property during our stay.

Other places to consider: Nomade, Amansala, Ahau, Papaya Playa, or local Airbnbs.

WHAT TO DO

YOGA
Tulum offers yoga everywhere—beach hotels and town shalas both host classes. Sunrise and sunset sessions are popular. I recommend classes at Ahau and Holistika for their settings and instructors.

SPA & ENERGY HEALING
Many wellness centers combine traditional spa services with energy healing—reiki, crystal work, cacao ceremonies, sound baths, and bodywork. Tulum’s abundance of healing offerings makes it an ideal place to try something new.

MAYAN CLAY TREATMENT & TEMAZCAL
Traditional Mayan clay baths and temazcal sweat lodges are widely recommended. Locals and other travelers frequently suggested both; they’re said to promote relaxation and well-being.

RUINS & CENOTES
Visit the Mayan ruins and nearby cenotes (natural sinkholes with crystal-clear water). Both are spectacular. Ask locals for the best times to avoid crowds and enjoy optimal lighting for photos. I couldn’t visit due to weather on this trip, but they’re high on my list for next time.

BEACH TIME
Relax on the beach and enjoy turquoise waters. Beach clubs often provide seating and umbrellas; explore along the shore to find the vibe you prefer. Note: some hotel beaches are adults-only or restricted to guests—policies vary.

BIKE AROUND
Biking is a popular, practical way to get around if you don’t drive. Rent a bike from hotels or local shops and enjoy the freedom to stop and explore. Watch for potholes and speed bumps on the main beach road.

STARGAZING
When the lights dim in parts of Tulum, the night sky becomes incredible. We watched shooting stars from a hot tub—an unforgettable moment. If you can, head out after dark for stargazing.

PHOTO SIGNS
Tulum is full of inspirational signs and murals—perfect for photos. Look for messages like “BE HERE NOW”, “EMBRACE THE MYSTERY”, and the playful “IF NOT / NOW / WHEN?”.

WHAT TO EAT

TIERRA (Holistika)
Tierra is the vegetarian/mostly vegan restaurant at Holistika and one of my favorites. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu offers smoothie bowls, lentil tostadas, tofu scrambles, and excellent matcha lattes. The ceramic pieces sold on-site are handmade and often feature uplifting affirmations—tempting to collectors.

MEOW’S CREAM
An all‑vegan ice cream shop where you mix fruit flavors to create a sorbet‑style treat. It’s a fun stop for dessert, and the staff were very friendly. Another option in town reportedly serves vegan ice cream as well.

PRIETO TULUM
A cozy café serving coffee and smoothie bowls in cute ceramic mugs. Great for breakfast or an afternoon break and Instagram-friendly photos.

BURRITO AMOR
Burrito spot offering flavorful vegan options and a grain‑free coconut flour tortilla. It’s a busy place—be clear when ordering vegan to avoid cross-contamination or accidental dairy additions. Still, a solid option for mixed groups.

RAW LOVE (Ahau)
Raw Love serves raw vegan dishes and smoothies with exceptional quality and presentation. We enjoyed smoothie bowls, alfredo zoodles, and a raw white chocolate cake—each dish felt wholesome and thoughtfully prepared.

MATCHA MAMA
Two locations offer matcha drinks, smoothie bowls, and sustainable coconut bowls—perfect if you’re craving matcha or a healthy breakfast option.

THE REAL COCONUT
An all gluten-, grain-, dairy-, and sugar-free restaurant at Sanara hotel. We loved the yucca fries and golden cauliflower. Choose desserts like the cookie skillet for a satisfying finish.

CHARLY’S VEGAN TACOS
One of the best meals of the trip. Charly’s serves inventive vegan tacos, grilled corn, and flavorful mains. The outdoor seating and friendly atmosphere made it a favorite for both vegans and non-vegans.

Other spots worth exploring: Suculenta Tamaleria (vegan tamales), La Hoja Verde, Fruto Místico alternatives, DelCielo Cafe, and local farm-to-table options.

WHERE TO SHOP

Tulum’s boutiques along the beach road feature local designers and handmade goods. These areas are great for unique souvenirs and ethically made fashion.

SHOPS

MAPACHE HATS
Handmade, vegan-friendly hats crafted locally. Some boutiques carry them, and custom orders are possible—plan ahead if you want a bespoke piece.

Eco-conscious swimwear brand available in several local boutiques. Stylish and sustainably minded, with one-piece and bikini options.

ZACBE JEWELRY
Recycled silver jewelry featuring crystals and delicate designs—perfect for a meaningful memento.

Tulum is a vibrant, vegan-friendly destination with something for every traveler—wellness, great food, and plenty of natural beauty. I can’t wait to return.
