How to make Brisket Tater Tot Casserole

Start by combining 2 cups chopped leftover smoked brisket with 1/2 to 1 cup BBQ sauce, depending on how saucy you like it. You can toss the brisket with the sauce first or layer them later — either works.

Add an 8-ounce block of cream cheese (softened), 2 cups shredded cheese (Monterey Jack, cheddar, or a blend), and a 4-ounce can of diced green chiles or jalapeños. Season with kosher salt, black pepper, and a sprinkle of BBQ seasoning to taste. Stir until everything is well combined.

Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish and spread the brisket mixture evenly across the bottom. Arrange a single layer of frozen tater tots over the top — you may not need the entire bag — and finish with another dusting of BBQ seasoning.

Bake in a 400°F oven for 30–40 minutes, until the tater tots are golden and the filling is bubbling. For the crispiest tots, serve the casserole immediately; the topping will soften a bit as it sits but still tastes great.

Garnish with sliced green onions and offer extra BBQ sauce or hot sauce on the side. Leftovers reheat well in the oven or air fryer to help the tots crisp back up.
