Product review
TotalBoat Spartan Multi-Season Ablative Bottom Paint is designed for aggressive fouling environments and contains 38% cuprous oxide as the active biocide. It is intended for use below the waterline on fiberglass, wood and steel hulls to resist barnacles, slime, algae, weeds and other marine growth. The formula is self-polishing and ablative — it slowly erodes as the vessel moves so fresh copper particles are continually exposed while limiting thick paint build-up.
The product is applied with conventional tools: a chip brush, a 3/16" foam or nap roller, or airless/conventional spray equipment. It may be thinned up to 10% using Brushing Thinner 100 for brush or roller work, or Spray Thinner 101 for spraying. Typical application is one to two thin coats, with an additional coat recommended for high-wear areas such as skegs and keel leading edges. Curing and launch windows depend on temperature; launches can occur in as little as 2–8 hours after the final coat, and there is no maximum dry time, allowing you to paint well before the season.
For best adhesion and long-term performance, apply Spartan over properly prepared surfaces. It can be used over many existing hard and ablative bottom paints that are in good condition, but do not apply over thin-film freshwater paints or on aluminum hulls. Prime bare fiberglass or steel with an epoxy barrier coat such as TotalProtect to enhance adhesion and reduce risks of blistering or corrosion. If a boat remains out of the water for more than two weeks prior to relaunch, lightly scuff-sand the dried surface to reactivate antifouling protection.
Spartan is available in Black, Blue, Green and Red, in both quart and gallon sizes. Coverage is up to about 500 square feet per gallon depending on application thickness and surface profile. Store cans in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area and protect them from freezing. Intended strictly for below-the-waterline antifouling use; follow temperature and humidity guidelines (40–90°F and <90% humidity) during application. For racing sailboats and high-performance powerboats, the cured finish can be burnished smooth to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency.
Pros
- High cuprous oxide content (38%) for strong fouling protection
- Ablative, self-polishing formula reduces thick build-up over seasons
- Applies with brush, roller, or spray — DIY friendly
Cons
- Not suitable for aluminum hulls
- Copper particles settle — requires thorough, extended mixing
- Cans can arrive dented if not well handled in transit
VerdictA robust multi-season antifouling that performs well in heavy-fouling environments. Its 38% cuprous oxide content and ablative, self-polishing action deliver reliable protection with minimal yearly upkeep. Easy enough for DIY application but demands thorough mixing and attention to surface prep. Not suitable for aluminum hulls; prime bare fiberglass or steel with an epoxy barrier for best results.

Repeat buyer — very pleased
Used this a second time in both fresh and saltwater with excellent results. It spread evenly and drew compliments on the finish. After six months in salt water the hull was remarkably clean, and the ablative coat stayed in place when bumped. Only downside: when I ordered from another seller the kit supplies weren’t included, which increased my out-of-pocket cost by around $20.

Strong season-to-season durability
Into its second season and still wearing well.

Solid quality and easy to apply
Good value and a quality coating that works well on trailered boats — it didn’t rub off on bunks or rollers. Follow the prep and mixing directions, and it lays down smoothly and dries quickly. It proved durable: I grounded on a sandbar, came off later the same day, and the bottom paint stayed intact.

First use exceeded expectations
First time trying Spartan and I’m impressed with coverage and appearance. My boat has been in the South Texas waters for months and shows almost no growth below the waterline. A neighboring vessel using the blue version also looked very clean.

Nice finish but watch packaging
The paint applied nicely and looks great; I’ll know more at the next haul-out. My cans arrived heavily dented when ordered through one seller, though direct orders from the manufacturer came well packed. I’d use the product again but buy directly to avoid damaged containers.

Have it professionally mixed thoroughly
The cuprous oxide settles and must be fully dispersed. A quick one-minute shake on a mixer and hand stirring left much of the copper on the can bottom. Have a paint shop run it five to six minutes on a shaker to ensure proper suspension. Once mixed it covers well and does provide good antifouling in salt water.

Works well but I still miss my old favorite
This is a dependable paint and I applied three gallons to build up a thick coating. Compared to a previous product I used, the Spartan didn’t perform quite as flawlessly in my local winter and spring conditions; a lighter application of the competitor showed less growth. Two gallons I tried earlier wore thin in a steady tidal current and revealed spots of the grey barrier coat underneath. I hoped three gallons would give a durable foundation for multi-season in-and-out trips, but results were mixed depending on conditions.
